after buyin a shoal of congo tetras when they were really small im getting frustrated at identifying their sex. When do the males fins start 2 extend?
Hi,
I bought a group of young congos and had trouble sexing them but it was because they all turned out to be female!! Aparantly females are more common than males at the LFS. How long have you had your group and how large are they?

You need females to break up the aggression otherwise they will constantly chase, fight and harrass each other

I didnt want an all male shoal just expected out of 5 i would get @ least 2 males, but it looks like they were all female.
That is good to know I bought 4 small ones that I assumed were females But I notice one has quite a bit more color.I was wondering if it could be a young male. You need females to break up the aggression otherwise they will constantly chase, fight and harrass each other

Oh I see, nightmare, I always make sure I watch them pick out males for me and check the bag too, it's hard when they are juvies but still possible to tell the difference under a good light as the males are slightly darker and stronger colours even from shop age
