because people have stolen them in the past and used them without permission. theft of intellectual property is bad, as far as i'm concerned. do not make the mistake of believing that just because an image appears on the internet, means that it is public domain. the two have nothing to do with each other. you should always assume an image is copyrighted unless it's otherwise noted. the owner of the photo is NOT required to display a copyright notice to be protected under the law. i do because too many people mistakenly believe they have the right to use any image they find online as they wish.
