I have a 10 gallon aquarium with a juvenile JD(approx 1") and a common pleco(approx 1.5") who both get along fine. Today at the pet shop, my brother decides he wants to get a juvenile firemouth. When introduced into the aquarium, the firemouth took a liking to a hiding spot in the corner amongst some fake grass. Despite there being plenty of other hiding spots, the JD continually harassed the firemouth, didn't nip at him that I saw, but more annoyed him. The firemouth in return who is barely larger than the JD, nipped at him quite a bit. I separated the two, I have the firemouth in a little 2.5 gallon right now, pending figuring out what I should do here. I have become attached to the JD and I don't want anything to befall him, and am willing to return the firemouth if need be. I need advice!

You have a potentially 8inch JD, 18inch common pleco and 5inch Firemouth in a 10Gallon tank? can't you see the problem

theyre going in a larger tank when they get bigger, right now theyre small

surely this post has to be a wind up? ok so its a growout tank? even so thats 2 territorial fish in a small space

hmmm... not sure if this is a joke or not but I am going to answer anyways.

Still small but get them in that larger tank asap, you said you have one for them, so put them both in. At least 50 gallons please. The reason they are fighting is because of the tank being too small. There isn't enough room to spread out aggression or hide from it (and no there cant be that many hiding spots because its a 10 gallon tank) The present JD thinks he owns the tank so a new fish coming in is potentially threatening to him.
