Two days (three maybe?) ago, my beautiful marigold mickey mouse platy gave birth. I missed it unfortunately, but she was in a breeder so I saw two little guy when I first noticed. I think it's her first batch, so she may not have had many more anyway.

The two new babies are ADORABLE. I personally think platy babies are some of the cutest, but ya know, I'm biased. :p They are currently light yellow, and I don't know who daddy is, so I dunno what markings they will end up with! I'm guessin either twinbars like one of my males, or yellow w/ out the mickey mouse. I am feeding them microworms, they are so cute with their little full bellies.

Question is, after mommy had those kids, she was still very very fat, but poopin. It was weird though, and worried me. It was VERY long, and thick, and black. I got pretty worried, so I fed her some peas to help with digestion, and it just kept on coming! It musta came out to be 6+ inches total.... and she looks like a different fish she is so thin (not too, just she was fat for so long!) Anyone else had simliar experiences? I'm wondering if somehow the pregnancy created constipation, or something?! It was just unbelievable, and I was sure she'd have more babies than that! She's been fat for a long time... hmmm maybe she was just constipated for a long time... :sly:

Well my female platie almost always looks fat. she looked smaller a day after having her babies and then started swelling again, all the while pooping and eating fine. I have read that they can hold sperm in after having some fry and can get pregnant again without mating, so maybe that is what she did. Or maybe she was stressed in the breeder and absorbed some of the fry?

I have to agree with you on the cuteness factor. I have never had platies before now and I can't imagine the tank without them now. The babies are so darn cute..........wish I could keep them all, but don't have the room! Ya know, I have had my main 55 gallon tank a long time, and I have had some of the most exotic and expensive fish around.... but I have never had more fun with my tank than I have now, with my simple livebearers and peaceful community fish. Everyone gets along, and everyone is beautiful. The most important thing though, is that they are easy. What more could you want? Being able to see a fish have babies is about one of the most exciting things....................

I never see a gravid spot on my platy, she just gets really fat as if she ate too much.............really bloated looking.

the only problem with this fat looking platy thing is that i dont have another platy to compare her too so i dont know how fat she should be i dont know what is bloated lol

 oooohhhh!

I haven't been able to tell if my platies are pregnant or not. Its a lot easier to tell with guppies!

I have to agree that platy babies are cute. One of my platies gave birth in my 55 gallon and one little platy has managed to live. At first it was pink but now its color is becoming more solid and it seems to be orange. Its very cute though. It seems to hang out with the baby black molly in the tank. I wish I could take a picture the two of them.

ain't that the truth? I was lucky with guessing about my platie's due date. I missed the first one, and one baby survived for a while, but I guess it got eaten.. :byebye:
