Just Started Running Two Externals...

Currently had a fluval external and an internal UV filter on my 180ltr tank. just hooked up a rena xp external along with the fluval and i transferred one lot of sponges from the fluval and both sponges from the internal into my rena and now have both externals running side by side.


It quickly developed a slight surface "oil" as many people will have seen, will the new filter be ok running side by side until it is fully seeded I was just going to leave it for about 6 weeks before removing the fluval and just running the rena by itself.


Ill keep a regular check on P.H nitrates etc but it shouldnt change too much should it as the other external is still running.


Any input greatly appreciated!

I started this with my 2 externals and ended up keeping both running for plenty filtration

If you intend to remove the fluval why not move all the media in the new filter to start with,the bacteria will probably share between the two filters,hence when you do eventually remove it has the bio load will be shared between both,you may get a mini spike,therefore you'll need to keep an eye on the stats anyway...just my opinion

Yeah, unless you still want to run the fluval afterwards there's no point effectively cycling two filters. Just move all the media across to the Rena and job's done. The media is what holds the bacteria, moving the mature media across will be no more disruptive than doing a filter clean when you do a water change.
