Fish Fanatic
Hello,
Just signed up to the forum and, as suggested, am saying a hello.
I'm returning to fishkeeping having loved it as a kid. Things have changed a lot though. It was undergravel filters in those days.
I'm currently fishless cycling a tank - a process which started as 'waiting a while before putting the fish in' but, now I've been reading fishkeeping sites almost constantly for three weeks, needs to be referred to as fishless cycling. I knew nothing about this a few weeks ago. So it's sort of turned into cycling as I've learned as I've gone along.
I'm not adding ammonia but have 'fed' the tank and used a filter starter. My local store is helping me to check the water although I have now ordered a full test kit.
Main problems, albeit without fish yet, have been the discolouration from bogwood tanin - stuck some carbon media in the filter - and then a cloudy discolouration. I initially put this down to particulates and threw in some 'filter aid' which seemed to send the cloudiness into overdrive and ultimately had no effect. I am now working on the theory that this is a bacterial bloom and have crossed fingers that it will clear.
Seemed to be a light, whitish film on the glass too.
Anyway, "Hello!"
