Have decided to join up to your fish site after hanging around for several weeks. I have 2 freshwater tanks, 1 is approx 45gals. & the 2nd is I believe 50gals. or thereabouts. Both are community tanks. I guess I inherited my love of fish from my father who kept 7 tropical & 1 coldwater tank. Although when I lived at home I wasn't very interested in them, I liked to sit & watch them but didn't get involved with any of the maintainance etc. Don't know if the fish were more hardy in the "old days" but I know I spend a lot more hours looking after my 2 tanks than my dad ever did on all his put together. The only major problem he had was once when he left the lid off a tank - went to bed - & the next morning there were several fish, in fact most of the tank inmates on the floor.
Hope to make some new friends here on the site. Now off to post a question about my kuhli loaches.

Charlie and well done for making the plunge!

I agree with your comment about seeming to spend so much more time looking after your fish than your dad did! I think partly we're more aware that fish do feel pain etc and that we need to avoid any problems, as well as knowing more about the problems that can arise and the ways to solve them.

But also, I suspect that some fish were hardier in the past (less inbreeding!) and of course the water suppliers didn't put as much crap into the water.

And of course we didn't have so many 'necessary' products that we need to buy!
