Hi

I have inherited a 2ft tank which has no leaks etc but where the hood was - there are sort of white crusty remnants of 'something' and also in general it needs a thorough clean.

Can anyone advise what I should / shouldnt clean the tank with ? To make it come out all bright and spangly..am confident it has lots of potential ;-)

Hi hun congrats on the new tank.

Sounds like limescale to me, everytank in a hardwater area can get this, it is where the water gets on the lid or top of tank etc, and dries.

I can get it if i dont maintain my tanks, and any second had tanks that have been bad ive used white vinigar and elbow grease, (please make sure its well rinsed with no residue left behind) but if its very thick you can scrape it off as well with a blade that you can use on windows so not to scratch the glass.

Weak milton solution has worked for me on dirty tanks (rinse throughly before adding fish) and again a freind used very weak bleach solution (again rinse very throughly)

good luck getting it bright and spangly!

Vinegar works well for getting rid of the "crusty remnants". On all the used tanks i have used i have just given them a once over with vinegar then a rinse followed by bleach followed by a THOROUGH rinse. Simple green works well on the suborn stuff
