I've read that some people have just a male apisto in their tank because either the male died or they weren't interested in breeding. Has anyone kept just females? Can a pair of females be kept without as intense territorial disputes because there is no male present? Does it make any difference?

I'm nearly done with my fishless cycle and have a heavily planted tank with a large ceramic cave, a couple of coconut caves and one formed by bogwood. I really fell for the female panduros at my lfs, but am a bit indifferent about the male and could go either way about them breeding.

Also, there is the possibility of getting a male cockatoo down the road for the same tank. Would they crossbreed? I wouldn't mind if they did, I'm really more concerned with what the aggression might be between them. It's a 30gal 3ft tank. Thanks for your advice. :good:

Yes you can, some people will colony breed apistos in a larger tank, with one male, & a few females.

It depends on you water source, ie tap or what ever and the chemistry of it ie if its soft pH 6-/+ you could try the Panduro or it your water is harder and pH 7-/+ the Cacatuoides would be better. It doesn't matter if you keep one male or one female or one pair (i always keep one pair) They wont inter-breed and the Cacatuoides is by far the easier to keep
