Hi all ive just aquired my first tank in 3 years (well got it 2 weeks ago but was cycling it ) .Its alot smaller than this tank is about 240 ltr (but trying to convince my new woman to get a 500ltr i have seen) smaller than my last emercency/hospital tanks but it will do for now just want a little advice please i have been given a pair of sajica's i have never had medium sized cichlids before ive always had discus tanks or large aggresive fish eg red terrors, midas, jaguars, arrowana or piranha the last time i keep the so called peaceful new worlds was a pair of severums well over 20 years ago

ill get to my question now the male is bullying the female is this due to the change of environment (i belive they were about to of maybee had laid eggs in the tanks i got them from , i dont know how true this is but i read on a website that sajica dont pair for life like most of the cichlids i have bred does any one have any advice on this for me i have made clear terriorys in the tank wich they share with a sliver shark

I have witnessed this kind of bullying behaviour between Sajica pairs in the past. I had to seperate them from contact as the female was getting bullied quite badly by the larger male. It was all caused because she had failed to rear fry (they got hoovered up by a syno). The worst was that I didnt know anything had happened until I saw the syno eat the wrigglers as they had laid vertically on the back of some bogwood which faced the back wall of the tank.

My best advice would be to seperate them from contact for a while and then see if the male calms down when he cant chase the female all over the tank. Even if you have only the one tank, get some plastic mesh to place as a divider in the tank without ruining the flow from the filter pump.

thanks for the advice scrappy they seem to be ok now i rearraged the tank and they are getting on great again she has now changed back to normal colors and not her breeding ones so i checked the other tank and there was no signs of eggs so i may have moved them just before they were about to breed they have reared fry before so fingers crossed i have never had such beautifully natured cichlids before they are a joy to watch i feel i have made a good choice to get back into the hobby im so happy :good:
