I am absolutely devastated, just lost a whole tank of Mbunas, temperature is at 32 but I think thermostat must have blown and it's been a lot higher because they look like they have literally cooked, mouths wide open, tank is very cloudy. One 1 inch youngster is still swimming around as though nothing has happened, and I have a plec in there who also appears fine.

I'm stunned

awww im sorry, i know that has to really suck. what kind of heater? maybe help others to prevent a problem like that in the future?

Tank is a Juwel Vision 180 with bow front and the heater came with it - slides down the side of the filter.

I suppose I now have to think about starting completely from scratch, replace all the filter medium etc?

Sorry to hear that Metermaid - terrible news.

The bacteria/media in your filter should be OK but i'd add new fish in small groups and test the water fairly regularly for the next few weeks just to be on the safe side.

Thanks so much for the kind words and advice, I am at least heartened to hear that my filter should be ok!, hopefully the one survivor and the plec will keep things ticking over until I regroup.

I had trouble with juwel heaters before.. not that they've ever overheated before (*touches wood*) but that they suddenly just stop working .. They're not the best imo, even though im using one now.. ive always a spare.

Sorry for your loss I too have a juwel and am annoyed with the heater, its set at 26 degrees but wont budge over 24, im thinking of replacing it or at least getting a standby. again sorry for your loss

sorry to here about your loss
but i think if you get a heater with your tank you should change it
i had the same prob with my heater that came with the tank(mine stopped working )
so how many people have had the same problem.
