Just Bad Luck?

Recently a friend of mine bought me a nice little dragon scale plakat male, (who she named captain egg nog) who seemed heathy, unfortunately he was a pet store fish so who knows what the poor guy went through, but I have found some nice fish from pet stores in the past. So I put him in my 10 gallon breeder with my delta male (don't worry, there was a divider between the two) and he seemed fine, until yesterday, I noticed him laying on the bottom of the tank so I switched him to a smaller tank, unfortunately the next morning he was belly up. I have tested the water and my other male is doing fantastic in the same tank, and there were no signs of sickness in the fish, what do you think killed captain egg nog?
