(1) Is it normal for my two dwarf gourami`s to spend a lot of their time near the surface of the tank in opposite corners.

(2) Is it normal for my khulli loach to play dead, i.e. lay on its side motionless for a while and then decide to dart around.

All water peramiters are within safe limits.

Hi

1) Are your gouramis new? When I bought mine it stayed at the back for months, but then it perked up a bit and now its at the front swimming around happily as ever. So, I think you should give them a bit of time.

2) I'm not sure on khulli loaches but I definately know that clown loach do it a lot! Just normal behaivour.

I hope this helps

Sam :D

Have had the gourami`s about 4 weeks now, they started off quite lively but seem to be very unsociable at the moment, might be because i have just lost 6 tiger barbs to fin-rot, two died and re-homed the other 4.
might also be because I have had a thorough clenup an moved a lot of ornaments around, possible?

yes
gourami are labarynthine (sp?) fishes... they can (and i think need to) breath small amounts of atmospheric oxygen.
as they settle down and get used to their new surroundings they will become more active and hang around the surface less.
this behaviour may be a sign of stress or illness but for now i wouldnt worry

oh yes very common boatia behaviour

If they are both males, you cannot expect them to be sociable with each other. Gouramis are territorial, so they will each stake a claim to their own territory, and if the tank is not large enough for two territories they may end up feeling stressed. Even a male and female aren't necessarily going to be socialising with each other.

Yes, indeed. He would probably be happier with some companions though; they are group fish. But obviously you don't want to go buying fish if you've just had deaths.

As long as you are aware that the only safe limits for ammonia and nitrites are 0.
