hi all a few days ago i had a post on here about my massive sialfin as she was expecting well she had her fry only i was not pleased with her as she developed fungus all over her lips as did the other 3 of the fish same batch of jumbo mollys one was black dotty other white other white with black spots other orange i can say i got 3 lots of fry off them and the other i got eggs this was all over night i got them day befor the fry is a gr8 bonus and i had the cheek to take them back to my local peter barrats store as the lips on all of them were disgusting like fungusy fied the man was happoy to give me a £20.00 credit note for the fish as their supplier had not told them they were bred in salt water when arriving to the store they had put them in fresh non salt water and thats whats caused the fungus the store was apologetic just a warning on not to get them from peterbarrats stockton if you do or have make sure u ask about what water they are living in

had ne 1 else had these problems from the fish store before?

Fair enough to think you've been ripped off, but think now about the welfare of the fish stuck in the middle. If there are no salt-sensitive fish in the tank, increase the salt concentration a little each day and use anti-fungal medication. If one of them gave birth to eggs this is another sign of stress from the sudden move from salt to fresh water and she aborted her fry. This isn't the fish's fault and you should do your best to save them and keep them comfortable. It sounds like it wasn't th guy's fault it was the supplier's.

yes i stated that in my post the store accepted them back i have had problems with jumbo mollys before thaught would give it another shot i have salt in my set up i have had mollys years the store had no salt my tank is fine .i took them back as i was disapointed and i learnt about the salt problem with the store on returning as they did not know the mollys had come from salty water they are complainging about the supplyer
also i did not say i had been riped off the fish were going to die wather i treated or not.they had fungus hangin off their lips and one looked like it was bleeding,

Ouch... does sound like it was a bit too late. Crap luck. The pet shop is right to get up the supplier, that was really stupid not to tell them. I wonder how many other fish died.

It is not all that uncommon I am afraid. I have seen the same thing with Anableps which were brackish water fish and being kept in fresh water. They didn't last long in the shop.

There is even more confusion on Mollies. I have recently been collecting in Guatemala and I caught mollies in both brackish (Laguna Salpeten) and freshwater (Laguna Peten and widespread) habitats. Even the mollies which I caught in Salpeten (Poecilia kykesis) are doing well in hard, freshwater.

Even on this site, I have seen the need for salt being espoused regarding mollies whereas I have always been bought up that it is soft water and sudden changes in Specific Gravity that should be avoided. I have always kept the mollies that I have caught in hard, clean, warmish, freshwater and they seem to have done quite well.

So even in the hobby , amongst people who are far more knowledgable than I, there is not a consensus.

It sounds to me that the shop acted quite responsibly in dealing with the matter. It was very unfortunate that the accident happened, but they seem to have reacted quite well. I would be pleased to deal with them if I lived in the area from the information that you have and a warning does not seem to me very fair.

Fellow middlesbrough person i have used peter barratts and they are not all that bad really, i got some bargain brittle nose plecs from them at £2 each, mainhead aquatics located in strikes in stokesly wanted £8 for ones the same size and £12 for adutls. So peter barretts isnt too bad imo althought they do overstock the small tanks and some fish dont get the correct care, but this is common in most large outlets.

And please try using some grammar in the next post i struggled reading most of the post

Most LFS's overstock tanks. The problem isn't so much tanks that are too small, just too many fish in them :)
It can be an excuse actually... Well he's already in an overstocked tank... so does it matter if he comes home and overstocks mine? lol, nah, I try not to do that.

You want overstocking? Go into chain store as in cheapie department store and look at the 1-10 gal cheapie tanks that they have for newbies. 7 large goldfish and loads of plants in a FIVE GALLON TANK? I hope that was photoshopped and they weren't actually keeping the fish in there. Platies and goldfish in a tank ABOUT ONE GALLON? I can possibly get a photo of the box, I have one of those. (Needed a cheapie fry raiser and hospital tank just-in-case job.)

i never said peter barratts were bad i buy fish from there i was simply warning you not to buy them fish from there,
yes they had a mistake with a crap suplier who done the dirty on them i was gutted about the fish as they had been passed from pillow to post but the man in the shop was angry with their suplier as a few people had returned their fish and they were all in poor condition with fins riped and rotten and lips hangin off so to speak profesional fish keepers will know what i mean.the fish were lovely they were massive i dont know if ne of yous have them or not the jumbo mollys realy are one of a kind i was gutted i couldnt do a swap for more of them sort i would love more jumbo's i have 2 already they are so placid to keep they keep my son amused all day bless him i got my other 2 jumbo mollys from pet mania billingham they are thriving best fish id say.love my mollys

Yes. Eggs. Poeciliids produce eggs which are fertilised in the body cavity, if the fish aborts before the eggs develop then they will lay eggs or sometimes they just pass eggs.

I know what you mean about Jumbo Mollies, although there is nothing cultivated that can touch a fully grown adult wild Poecilia velifera. In my opinion nature does it best.
