I went into my lfs today and saw some of these beauties there @ £9 each  labeled Julidochromis marlieri.
I've never seen them before and asked if they could tell me something about them. Well not much was the answer but it would be fine to put them in a community tank.

I somehow thought "not" :sly: and went to investigate....the answer I came up with was "not" - is that correct ?

It really really makes me cross when the give out rubbish information. And this is not even from temp staff - but the owners of the shop :grr:

Gorgeous fish though and wish I could keep them - but not in my current community set-up it would seem :(

If I didn't know better and didn't do my research - how aweful would it have been to put a bunch of them in a bog standard community tank :/

I'd trust cichlid forum. My friends have some and they think they're responsible for eating their ocellatus fry. Ocellatus are vicious beasts (they are 2 inches ish, and attack crocodiles in the wild...) and if a julie is willing to try it on with these guys, I'd be in the thinking they're pretty mean.

They are awesome though, they look like little stripey submarines. I think Marlieri is the biggest of the julidochromis species, if you take a look for something smaller you might have more luck.

Thanks :) but I didn't actually even ask anyone on any other forum. Just read a few articles on them - the one from the cichlid forum being the first that came up.

The safest thing to do is assume that any fish from the African Rift lakes is not a community fish. These should all be in tanks dedicated toward their types.
