Ok, this is my first time doing a journal. All other tanks were started with my boyfriend's help.

We're going to be setting up a 55 gal (US, and it's 4 ft long) rock tank for Mbunas. At this point I'm not sure what the lighting will be nor what the filter type is, I do know that my boyfriend has about 3 extra filters laying around that will work on the tank. He's talking about taking the hanging filter off his 125 gal and putting it on the 55 gal to jump start the cylce some and then getting another canister filter for his 125 gal. He likes to put more filter on the tanks then they probably really need. I'm also not sure whether I should put only crushed coral on the bottom or if I should do a mixture of coral and sand for the fish to dig in. I think we have more than enough coral already in storage in our shop. BTW, you'll quickly notice that my boyfriend is a fish supply hoarder. I'm not planing on any live plants on the bottom, but what about floating plants? We've aready determend that the tank will go in our dinning room once the 60" TV is out of there and either fixed or out of the house. So how soon we start this is based on how soon the TV is out of the dinning room. I have my choice of fish in poll form, please give me your ideas on which would be better and why. And what has worked for you in the past.

If you've noticed anything I've not thought of yet PLEASE let me know. I'm totally new to all of this and had left my boyfriend to figure out everything about my 30 gal, all I did was tell him what fish I had to have in my tank and he told me everything else. This one, I'm trying to do without much of his help, doing a lot of the leg work myself, though he'll help with the finishing touches.

On a side note, after this tank is done, a fence built, the pond expanded, a few cars back to running, and adding on to our home, we're talking about making a fish room (concrete floors) and adding a salt water tank or two to our collection.

As this is a poll - i've moved it to the main forum. :good:

I voted for no.2 as mixing different Labidochromis species can be problematic. Plus i love a little variety. :D

Ok I talked to him about the type of filters he's got and it looks like we'll be putting on 2 back of the tank filters (not sure of the brand). He says one is made for up to 55 gal and the other is made for up to 50 gal, so with the 2 that's about 105 gal and that should help with any over population. The tv repair company is suppose to be out here mid day Saturday to try fixing the TV, this will be their 3 try at fixing, lets hope they get it right this time.

Well, it looks like the tank will be put in the house today. Water will probably be added in a few more days, then I gotta start the cycle. Is there any kind of cheap fish I can put in the tank to help with the cycle? I've got a lot of baby guppies I could use or even some feeder gold fish that are living in my pond, other than those I don't want to risk the lives of any of my other fish, but I could also buy some other cheap fish. (Sorry if this sounds mean to anyone here, but the baby guppies are going to be food soon and the feeder fish were used to make sure I had good hiding places from the raccoons for my pond fish.)

I highly recommend fishless cycling, no harm to fish, you just have to live with an empty tank for awhile. It should go pretty quickly with the mature filter from your boyfriend's tank. Here's a link.

Thank you for the link, it was a bit much reading, lol. I'm going to have Joe read it, to see how he cycle's tanks, he's done this many many times, with lots of different tanks.

You guys are all going to think I'm crazy, but my plans have changed again! I've found a woman who want's my baby A. Cacatuoides and will give me some baby N. brichardi (which Joe loves and has wanted some). Thankfully, nothing has been done to the tank except brining it into the house and placed in the dinning room. This weekend I've got to get to cleaning it. I've yet to research these guys, gonna do it before Sunday, but got some running to do right now. If anyone has any experiance keeping these please let me know, also, what else have pleople kept with these? She's got some juvi ps. dubiosi with them.

This is from cichlid forum about housing them w/other cichlids:
Some commonly available fish that should be compatible would include; Neolamprologus leleupi, cylindricus; Altolamprologus calvus, compressiceps; Julidochromis marlieri or regani.

There is, however, a bit of a secret to making this work. Any other tankmates must be much larger then the brichardi to begin with, and they must establish their territory in the aquarium first. Purchasing an adult pair of calvus and juvenile brichardi would be an example of a situation that would normally work out. There is one important caveat: in a tank of less then 120cm (48") you would be limited to two pairs of fish when including brichardi in the mix.

I would not recommend keeping N. brichardi with Malawian, or Victorian cichlids no matter the circumstances, and Tanganyikan shell dwellers in most cases.

Well, I think I'll have some time to get another pair of fish before I get the N. brichardis. She's got to get the parents to spawn first. So I think I'll have at least 2 months. So, I'll look into the fish you recomended and see which ones I want, if any. I may just decide to do only the N. brichardis.
