ok i have 1 of each of these fish, i think they are both males. the johannii always attacks the Melanochromis auratus. ANy reason why??? aren't they compatable???

These fish are very similar in shape, size, and color, so I would say that they are not really compatible because they see each other as a threat. It's really best to keep just one Melanochromis variety in the tank. They are both very aggressive fish, and could cause serious problems in smaller tanks.

Not really the best idea, because they are so similar it is best to keep similar fishes apart, partly because of hybrid breeding and partly because of agresion, my kennyi does not care at all about anything that isn't a kennyi (actually kennyi and one particular lab he has a thing for) in his tank, he is the dominant fish, and my male johanni doesn't care about anything tha's not johhani and not real close to him, their agresion is limiterd and directed at it's major competitors, your johanni doesn't care at all what we call the auratus if it's competitive you'l have a problem especially if it's male either get a many extra females for each and hope the don't crossbreed or get rid of of one, it's hard to tell how bad the situation will actually get but probally not good
