Do you need slate to make the Riccia or java moss carpet is it there to hold it down?

no any rock will do as long as its not calciferous (for example limestone or sandstone)

as above... it's just for weight. i like slate as it's flat and wont notice under a carpet. it's the hairnet that holds it down but without the slate it would just bob to the surface like a cork.

Yeah, riccia is a floating plant and doesn't root onto anything. You could use anything aquarium safe and weighty

I used slate at the front and increasingly larger rocks towards the centre to give a Riccia fore and midground, rather than just have a few isolated islands of Riccia in the foreground.
