no any rock will do as long as its not calciferous (for example limestone or sandstone)
 
as above... it's just for weight. i like slate as it's flat and wont notice under a carpet. it's the hairnet that holds it down but without the slate it would just bob to the surface like a cork.
 
Yeah, riccia is a floating plant and doesn't root onto anything. You could use anything aquarium safe and weighty :)
 
I used slate at the front and increasingly larger rocks towards the centre to give a Riccia fore and midground, rather than just have a few isolated islands of Riccia in the foreground.
