Hi all i just got 6 today from the lfs, they are still small probably just a little bit larger than a full grown platty, how long will i have to wait until i can sex them, get two paired off and sell the rest, also i know im going to get flamed but at the moment i have them in a 30 litre tank and would just a pair on their own be ok in this tank or should i think about getting a larger tank once they pair up.

Thanks dont know alot about these fish just a impulse buy really.

Unless your planning on a upgrade a 30 litre will just not cut it, Cichlids are very very messy, I have a 60 Litre and that is about 60cm wide im guessing yours is 30 cm wide, these fish grow to 15CM!! you have six of them they wouldnt even be able to turn around in your tank.

Please Do Reasearch before you buy the fish, I would take them back if I was you.
(No you couldnt keep a pair in the tank)

Many THanks

Firstly i have bigger tanks, secondly please dont speak to me like some noob its rude i asked cause i dont know alot about the fish, they are merely the size of platys at the moment and when i got home i read up on the profile of these fish. All i wanted to know is how long it will take them to mature and maybe pair off i realised i will need a larger tank, i have a 60 litre on standby for the pair i choose and the rest will be sold on.

I wanted to mainly know what growth rate they will grow at, whats the best way to sex them and what age they will become mature.

Maybe i put my wording incorrectly on the first post but i do have bigger tanks infact i have 2 125 litres a 60 litre and two 30 litres so i have plenty of room thats not the issue its more information on the fish.

But thanks for the replys though always appreciated. :good:

I said "Unless Your planning", So if you do have a upgrade then none of what I said applies to you, Its still not good to impulse buy and research should be done first. But Mistakes are made, And I dont think a 60 Litre will cut it either mate, you might get away with the 125 Litre but I dont think these are good for community's especially as I read they get agressive during breeding. You might get away with the 60 actually but I think it would have to be a species tank, But seek more advice as im am just a noob and thought I would just give my thoughts...

Many Thanks

Yeah i did read this aswell they will be the only fish in the 60 litre if they went into their, but like i say i have read some bits and pieces and from most account people seem to have kept a pair in a 15 gal what is 60 litre, it may not be ideal but i think its enough space for two fish of this size but you can only learn from experience of keeping the fish and if they become to big for this tank then i have the 125 litre again another empty tank, so it would only be them to be considered to go into it i just need to know more about breeding sexing etc.

Like said 30 litre temporary measure until 60 litre is empty on monday, then when i get a pair, 4 will be moved on and i will then see how the pair do in their if they become unhappy and too large then i shall think about moving them to the 125 litre

thanks.

Alright mate,
I used to have a Cichlid tank and I found Jewels to be the most aggressive and disastorous purchase I have made!> Maybe I was just unlucky, but they chased others almost always and I ended up exchanging them to Peter Barratts (for their sins, Ha- Ha) The ones I had grew to about 5inches and the Males had more elongated Dorsal, Caudal fins.

They looked quite nice with blue patterning - but unfortunately proved to be a nightmare for me and my other fish.
Hope you have a better experience, if u keep them.
Good luck, Rosst

Thanks

All ive seen since getting them home is the 6 fish shoal together no aggression at all yet, but that might come in later stages, hopefully i will get a pair move the other 4 on to new homes, and try to get the pair to spawn.

Oh yeah thats another question how much do these normally sell for because i got these for £1.50 each what i thought was far too cheap but i didnt grumble

or should i think about getting a larger tank once they pair up.

Stiffler is asking advice on wether they need a bigger tank, so he is doing the right thing.
i have had many impulse buys, reasearching the fish beforehand is they way to go, but as long as people are prepared to do right for fish when they get them home surely thats ok.
I've also been looking at Jewels they are nice fish, agressive but beautiful, best in a 4 footer, and i,d say 3ft for a pair , tankmates should be other aggressive fish, they go well with c.american cichlids but then you need an even bigger tank, You will find in a smaller tank their will be constant battles between them ,they need their space
regards Angel

If I remember rightly, the Males have a bigger forehead and are slightly larger overall.

P.s; They used to have a right battle with my Firemouths (whom were no shirkers) and the 'territorial' nature of them really comes into play when larger. + need good filtration, as quite messy.

Maybe they got there name as they sparkle like a jewel?? They are certainly not a 'jewel in the crown', in my book anyway.!!

Thanks angelmouse and rossyt99 these are the replys i was looking for, just need advice really on the fish i can supply them with the relevant tank size when they are older and larger :good:

I exchanged my fully grown Jewel for an 8pounds credit note - that was about 7 years ago. (Couldn't believe my luck, as I wanted rid of it sharpish!)

I bought mine for cheap also> I now know why they were so cheap, for a colourful Cichlid.

Try to part-exchange them, or get Cichlid species keeper to take them if possible.

Yeah Mate I really wasnt trying to be rude, It may just come out that way over the internet, and angel I know he was asking for advice and I gave him some advice. Yeah the only reason I was concerned was I read their profile and it said they were extremely agressive.....

Anyway Goodluck with the fish w/e you do with them :p

(the poster before me was a bit harsh) but from the pics they look lovley

Many Thanks
