Our 2 jewels seem to protecting one area of the tank in the past 2 days. The female even seems shy when I look in the tank if she notices me she will run to the other side of the rock or fence in that area. Are they protecting eggs or being teritorial? They have never acted this way before and have shared the tank with the other fish for months with no problems.

They both have been red for sometime now. Female never looked like she was getting fat but I thought these guys were egglayers.

Is it possible I missed it? Never noticed her getting fat but was distracted by the size some of the fish wre getting including the male.

your fish most likely are getting ready to breed [ if they haven't by now ] . ;)

To ensure the safety of their spawn then later fry they will become very aggressive , most likely kill your other fish [ some of them ]. :(

It is hard to tell sometimes when a female is full of rowe . :/

With young adults it's hard for me to tell male from female . :dunno:

They are very protective parents .

females and males can be sexed by the blue spots on the tail. in the males the blue spots form outlines of the edge of the caudal fin evenly spaced apart. in females the spots are randomly placed. also very aggressive when spawning.

what else is in the tank and how big is the tank?

55 Gallon Cichlid Tank
2 blue striped kenyi
2 jewel (1 male and 1 female)
3 Bumblebee
2 Melanochromis auratus
1 Female Copadichromis borleyi "Kadango Red Fin"
1 Synodontis Ocellifer Catfish
1 Common Pleco
2 Ice Blue Zebras
2 copadichromis chrysonatus

You need to put a tank devider in. The first thing the jewel cichlids will go for is the bottom feeders, because they eat the eggs, make sure you keep them away. once jewel cichlids lay their eggs, they kill anything that comes neer. I know from experience that you should either put in a tank devider, or get a seperate tank for them. Nothing fancy, just make sure you use small rocks so the cichlids can buid a nest, they like digging holes for their eggs, and dont use a in ground filter untill the eggs hatch. the tank can even be as simple as a 10 gallon.

could have some fighting as you do have aggressive fish in with them. the fry will more than likely be eaten, unless you move them after they are freeswimming.

thought the Jewels themselves were aggressive also. how long till the eggs hatch? right now this is the only tank I can house these guys

the jewels are very aggressive. i can see them and the auratus and bumblebees duking it out. imo, the jewels are able to hold their own against them. you can try to divide off the tank with their territory. the eggs should turn clear with a black dot right before they hatch.
