I am torn between the Jewel Rio 125 and the Aqua One AR-850. DOes anyone have either of these? I heard that the jEWEL internal fitlers are not very good? Aquaone filters are very good i also heard on that model. The aquaone is 160 litres and the Jewel is 120. I cant decide between the two! Heeeelp! lol

Cheers

Bigger is better!! :)

I use juwel and dont mind the internal one since I have an external, I wouldn't want to rely on it though but many on here do and they think they are great.

Cant offer any info on the Aqua one but if it does have a better filter, is bigger in size, comes with your lighting system and a heater then I would go for this one.

I've had both juwel and aquaone tanks and I must say that while the juwel tanks are very good, I definately prefer aquaone tanks and wouldn't have any others. (apart from a really big specially built one if I was lucky enough to win the lottery of course!) Also like scorphonic says 'bigger is better!!!! Please post some pics when you have your chosen tank set up!! :good:

Juwel filters are pretty good. They just look crap  .Also my juwel brace bars have broken of and my tank is bowing by a centimetre :shout:

Cant really help, never had an aquaone tank but they DO look good... echo teh comments to get the biggest you can afford and house.

Cheeseyfeet - if you havent already you need to drop your water level until the tank doesnt bow, and get a replacement brace - i have had to do this and now have a welded metal brace on my Vision 260...... the other option is to do nothing and the tank will eventually leak.

I'm also looking at the juwel rio 240 and the aquastyle 980,I havnt got one yet but IMO i think the Juwel ones are better built and i think the filters are excellent. The good point about the aquaone tanks are the built in wet and dry filter which you dont even see and that the aquaone tanks have 3 light(well the aquastyle tanks do). Also the Aquaone tanks dont have silicone on the edges which can be good but may also magnify the fish etc making it slightly blury on the corners.

I have had a 65 litre aqua one tank in the past and i must say the filters are very good. All you have in the pipe in the tank, everything else is contained in the lid and they do do a very good job. I just like the wood on the Jewel tanks. It's such a hard decision. Most people I find have not heard of aqua one, i thought they were a really big name in fish keeping myself. I think i am prob going to go for the Aquaone tank as it is bigger and has a better filter system

Yeah im really thinking about the Aquastyle but with the juwel tank i get 240 litres whereas the aquaone is 215 and the aquauone is slightly dearer lol,its such a hard decision any idea when your getting your tank and are you going tropical or marine like me :)

Go for the Juwel, size does matter in this hobby!! :). You can always pick up a good inexpensive filter at a later date...

Juwel = bigger, cheaper!! Definately something that should make you chose it!! :)

I have the AQUAONE 850 and it was my prefered choice before buying. After 5 months and a bit of filter media tweaking it's brilliant! :shout:

Ok, so some will say about questionable build quality but to my mind they are so darned attractive, especially the 'frame-less front' effect. My water is always chrystal clear and stats. remain excellent and consistant.

Cabinets are again attractive in either wood effect or silver (i have wood) and VERY well made.

I have had Juwel in the past......good but boring.

After all, Firstly it's a wild creature's home but secondly it is in your home so looks are important :good:

You have convinced me, I shall get the Ar-850. What filter tweaking did you do?

You have convinced me, I shall get the Ar-850. What filter tweaking did you do?

They supply you with (for each of the two filter chambers) A carbon filled tray with woolen first stage media. A packet of ceramic tubes (noodles) and a layer of black coarse media.
My suggestion. Do not use carbon trays (save them for when you need to filter out old medications once they have done)
Starting from the bottom, use the 1" thick coarse foam media. Then a single layer of the noodles (you will need to add to the amount they give you  ) Then a thin layer of finer foam media (about a quarter of an inch) Finally on the top a layer of white first stage woolen media (I use the stuff that is kept in the pond dept. of the LFS as you can cut and divide it into the thickness you have left between the fine foam and the spray bar. Rinse before using as it is a little dusty after cutting) (£2.99 a bag and lasts ages!)
Right, if you have all followed that then all that you need to do is once a WEEK rinse (or replace) BOTH the top white media (in tap water if you like because it is only a mechanical filter). After a MONTH gently rinse the fine foam media and noodles OF ONE CHAMBER in OLD TANK WATER. (This is very important as it houses valuable bacteria which you cannot see) The next month do the other chamber. Finally after about 6 months gently rinse out the bottom coarse media, again in old tank water.
My final tweak is to place a 1" thick coarse foam media in the chamber where the water flows back into the tank just to quieten the gurgling sound. If you cut it so it is slightly too big then it will be held in place. It must be coarse so as to not restrict flow back.

Remember these are just my experienced suggestions that work for me......Good choice BTW :good:

Ok i think im convinced now to get the aquastyle 980 :) i will be using it as marine and will not be using a sump.WOold it be possible to remove 1 of the filter trays as the 980 has 3 i think. Also are the lights any good and is the powerhead supplied silent. On the corners of the tank is it noticable that it gets magnified much as its curved?
P.S Dorsey are you using your tank as marine or tropical?
Thanks

Hi, as my signiture suggests...tropical ;) No experience in marine whatsoever  Power head is quiet but not silent....is there such a thing :shifty: Yes, a bit of magnification/distortion at the front corners but IMO better than a black frame. Yes the 980 does have 3 chambers and if you are going to remove one then you do not have enough filtration
