Hi all,

I am desperately trying to start off a planted tank and am not having much luck. The problem seems to be the filter flow rate. The pump itself (attached on the far left of the tank) is pushing out water towards the right and water is coming out from the filter outlet (on the far right) and pushing water left.

The tall plants at the back are a disaster, as they are being pushed by these two, opposing currents of water. Half are slanting to the left and the other half to the right. It looks just awful.

Is there anything I can do to the set up without actually changing the pump (it is quite new). Would increasing the filter media help reduce the flow rate? Also the guy i bought the tank from suggested that I block the hole on the pump itself. Is this safe??

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

I use a spray bar just under the surface of the water which causes mild surface disruption but distributes the flow evenly across the tank. It makes everything sway gently rather than get pushed over.

Thanks very much for your reply!

The spray bar would attach instead of the filter outflow, right? I'll give it a try.

Forgive my ignorance, but is the hole on the powerhead called a venturi hole? If so can i block it?

Thanks again,
T

A venturi is a system which sucks in air and pushes it out of the output as bubbles.

The spray bar does indeed attach to the area where the filter outflow usually is.
The black bar across the top of the picture in my sugnature is the spray bar, and the filter is at the back right.

Thanks, i will def try to set up a spray bar.

So the hole from the power head can be changed into a venturi? or is that only useful if you're trying to set up a CO2 system? I'm thinking about just sticking a piece of jablo into it. Would that be safe you think? I could try to take a photo if that would help explain better.

Thanks a lot

T

Uh, I wouldn't stick anything anywhere.

Distribute the flow, don't remove it. If you stop the flow then you will be removing alot of the filtration which is a very bad idea.

I thought it sounded strange that's why i'm asking, but that's what the guy of the shop said to do!

Just to be clear though, this is the powerhead we're talking about, not the flow from the filter.
