I have a 5 inch female JD in a 55G tank by herself. She has layed eggs twice in the last 2 mouths. The problem is that what ever fish I put in there she kills in like an hour. She killed my 3 inch male red devil, a female firemouth, and a 5 inch male convict. I was wondering if I got her a 4 to 5 inch male JD if she would try and kill him. I was thinking that if I did that she might pair off with the male JD. I'm wanting to have a pair. Dos anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

JD's are named that for a reason, cause they can be quite moody and pack quite a punch. My 4 inch male JD doesn't allow anyone except his buddy casper (the chocolate pleco) in his tank and thats just how he is. Your female since she is laying eggs is probably extremely territorial as she is looking for a mate. It is very hard to say whether or not if you put a male in that they will pair up, but chances our, they will just fight and fight and fight until one is dead or mortally wounded. I tried to get my guy a girlfriend but right away, he charges her and started lip locking with her and they continued for close to an hour until finally I got her out and took her back to the lfs. If you do try to get her a mate, make sure you either have a divider handy, another tank, or a lfs that you know will buy him back or atleast take hm back from you...

I hope they match up for you but it really all comes down to luck :good:

One thing I;ve heard other people doing is rearrange the tank so she has to reestablish her terriotry and then introduce the male. That way they are both without a set boundary and this may help them be more friendly. But like I said... it's all luck

I think the divider and re-arrange tank layout is a good idea.

If you can get a suitable male, stick him in with a divider between them for a day or so, them mix the decor round and see how they get on. I should imagine that a male of a similar size should be able to stick up for himself anyway?
