Got some java moss, not planted it yet, because its like a dirty brown/green colour. Is that the normal colour for this moss or should it not be nice and green!

Chris

Should be nice and green im my (albeit limited) experience, it might just be old or not have been in the light for a while that'll probably turn it yellow. I would put it in your tank until you are ready to plant it and that should help it along. If you put it in a mesh bag, it'll get the nutrients and CO2 but you can still take it out easily when you want to plant it.

Sam

PS did you get the hornwort? It survive the Royal Mail ok?

It can get a bit ragged looking alright.........i have had Java moss that was totally brown so brown in fact i thought it was dead, but Java moss being Java moss it came back to life nice and green, took a few weeks mind, but its very hard stuff to kill. Id say it will do fine given time.

Sam, im at work so havent got the mail today but not had anything as of yet!

Ill let you know!

Thanks for posting guys, i think ill net it for a while at the top of my tank...see how it looks after a week or two!

Chris

Java Moss will grow like crazy and get over everything if you let it. If it gets too long or dense, some of it may turn brown. Keep it pruned and it should stay fairly green. Don't let it grow too thick.

I found that a small, java-moss covered piece of corkwood makes a nice skimmer for the surface. Good at collecting stray flakes and plant parts. Fish like to hide under it too.

Thats a cool idea, may have to try this one, my fish never go near the tome of the tank.

I would say just dump it. I have fought for months to keep the brown stuff I got from greenline alive but it still looks terrible. Just recieved a very genorous sized piece for another member and it is absolutly brilliant.

It should be very dark green and the better quality it is the better it will adapt to your tank.

However if you have CO2 and and good lighting it might perk up.

Anyone know why the companies can't get it to us in tip top condition? As it was on two seperate occasions I recieved less than heathy moss from greenline.

It gets too cold, mostly. No sunlight, might be an issue too.

I'm telling ya, Java Moss is pretty hardy stuff. I have a 10 gallon I use just for growing it. I have about 8 or 9 pieces of cork wood floating around with moss on them. I will seperate them, and withing a day, they will all be stuck together like an island. It's crazy.

I don't use a hood or a light on the tank, just a filter, heater and air. No need for CO2. I've given tons of it to some local LFS. One shop owner calls at least once a week asking for some.
