Hi all, I know I'll probably grow to regret this maneuver if i carry through with it, but does anyone know if java moss can make a carpet? I know it never really "roots" per say, but would it have enough grip to hold onto a sand substrate and spread?

My guess would be to do the same as you would with riccia.

Although a carpet of java moss would be a magnet for debris and waste.

Hmm, that's true about the debis thing. Though that article did give me an idea I can try out.

I'm going to get some of those plastic needlework frames sized to fit the side panels of my tank, and toss some java moss on there, weave in and secure it down with a little bit of string, and see if it goes anywhere from there.

If the moss was vertical, i'm betting it wouldn't collect near as much debris as if it was horizontal. This just might work.

You could allways use a flat pebble and tie it on with fine fishing line. Atfer a few weeks it will root to the pebble. after that it's a case of trimming it. I know mine will grow and anchor its self to the small gravel, dont know about sand though.

plus I'm pretty sure there's a better moss to use than java, for this. I think its used on wood mainly though.
