Dunno, a month or six weeks maybe, never really timed it, it should attach easily to driftwood, i usually just tie them down with cotton thread and forget about them, so the length of time doesn't really matter.

Ditto, once the cotton has rotted off it should be attached.

I also noticed my lfs put some sort of black string around the bottom of my java fern. Should I have taken that off or is it better to leave it on?

When u say around the java fern, do u mean when it comes already attached to the bog wood? If so then as these guys are saying, it is holding it onto the bogwood most probably so just leave it and it will rot away.

BUT..if its not attached to the bog wood then i`m guessing it may just be holding it together, in which case you may cut it off or leave it on and then use your own cotton thread to attach it to something. I wouldnt have got involved with this question only i got some java fern today not attached to bogwood and was slightly confused since it was strung together with cotton, yet not attached to wood. As i said above, i just cut it off, rearranged it how i wanted it and then retied it to my bogwood.
