I've got my filter on the lowest setting, but it still produces a moderate current. I notice the leaves on my java fern moving quite a bit. Would the current affect my java ferns ability to grow?

Some of the other plants i've moved to more quiter parts of the tank because i feared the current was too strong for them, but the java fern has a more sturdier stem...

Has your filter got a movable tip, if so direct it too the surface. But if not, bummer........ i dunno what to do. I dont think it would effect growth emensly but i think it would not be the BEST environ. Thats not too say they wont grow however. They do like some water flow. Most plants should do fine with a moderate current.

I wouldn't worry about the flow too much since most plants do grow in freshwater streams and would be used to it. I'd only worry if the plant was actually being dislodged by the flow.

Java ferns are very hearty plants and so thrive in practically any conditions. They also grow fairly slowly but keep an eye on it for any negative changes like brown or spotty leaves. I think it should be fine though.

Goodluck! :)

What should you do if the leaves do start showing brown spots? I have noticed a few of the leaves of mine have a section that have done this.

Um, the brown spots could be from a few things. Lack of something, or too bright a light. Java fern dont handle as much light as we put on our other plants. They do best in a slightly shaded area. Maybe its too bright for them where they are?

I had hygrophila the the current would just push the stems sideways, giving them little chance to root (in some cases actually snapped the stem at the base).

I'll probably position the filters outlet closer to the surface to reduce the current strength a bit.

Some of what I've read about them suggests they have water running over the leaves , to keep them in the path of the filter[ supposed to grow better ].

Mine do good all over my tank :D
