i bought my very first plant today for my 20 gal and i really dont know how to prepare it i mean do i have to plant it in the gravel tie it to a rock or something or can i leave it in the pot i bought it in plz some one give me some help. :/

I'm not an expert but I believe jave ferns should be tied to a rock or something of that nature. You don't plant those in the substrate. You definitely need to take it out of the pot and remove all of the woolish packing. Any that you don't remove will break down and rot in the tank.

Edited for spelling

the pots rot...

here is all you need to know about Java Fern

JAVA FERN

but it works like this..

1 - take it out of the pot
2 - place it in your tank and cover the roots with your gravel/sand ( don't have to be to picky )
3- if it floats place a small rock on the main root to hold it down after a few weeks remove the small rock and it should be on it's way !!

easy and nice plant...have fun !!

:)

I've heard people deny this, but it was always my understanding that if you bury the rhiozome (thick horizontal root) of a java fern, it will rot away and die. Find a rock or some aquarium ornament to tie it to, and eventually the thin roots will anchor it. If you REALLY want to "plant" it on the bottom, bury it with all the roots under the sand/gravel, then gently pull it out until the rhiozome is out in the open, and the other roots are down to keep it anchored.

>>> the pots rot...

The pots plants come in here are made of plastic and do not rot.

>>> cover the roots with your gravel/sand

There is a difference between the roots and the rhizome, (stout horizontal stem from which the leaves grow). You do not want to bury the rhizome - it will rot. From the rhizome, long roots develop over time, these can go into the substrate.

Java fern is best tied to a rock or piece of wood. How long it takes to attach is impossible to say, it depends on the growing conditions the plant is in. If it is growing well then it will anchor quickly, if it is barely surviving, it will take a long time.
