I have just bought some Java fern, don't have any experience with this plant. I know it does attach to rocks and things but can it just be plonked in gravel? If attaching to rocys, how long does it take for it to establish?

Thank you.

Quite easy to look after so long as you make sure that you do not bury the rhizome :) I find that it takes a few weeks to a few months for the roots to attach themselves.. if you sit it on the gravel, they will attach to the gravel itself eventually. IMO, it grows best on wood

^ agree.

TBH, i originally wedged java fern in garden pebbles, but i have now buried them in the sand, they seem to be doing fine. lets hope it stays that way. :good:

you can use clear thread, elastic bands, super glue or fishing line to attach them to wood, rocks or finger (ok - the finger attachment is usually as a result of being distracted during the superglue method

Mine started off at 1-2mm (teeny tiny small ones) and are now 60-70mm in about 6 months in a low-tech tank.

I don't know if they are attached themselves or not because i use clear thread which stays in place.
