how would i remove newly grown fern rom its parents?

is it a case of just leaving the old brown leaves to rot away leaving the new plant, or is ther another way to remove them?

I think it is best just to leave them to seperate on their own.

If you try to seperate them yourself you sometimes end up leaving holes in the mother plant.

I have yet to find any aquatic plants that can't handle being pruned or divided.java fern can easily be seperated or trimmed back it will simply grow back. and probably will become a little more bushy

probably true but this isnt pruning or dividing, your poking holes in the plant :)

bear in mind that this is growing in normal substrate and that the actual new plants are growing from near dead leaves at a quite alarming rate as well

I'm just saying from previous experience that when you try to remove java babies from the mother they tend to leave a hole where they grew from.

yeah, the actual mother plant is brown though, and dying

i have removed several of them today to plant in another tank and will let you know how they get on

ive left as little of the mother leaf on them as possible as they were dying

Just a minor point, but you say that the fern is growing in normal substrate.....java fern is usually rooted to wood or rocks, and its roots dont need to be in a substrate - this may in part be causing your mother plant to die off.

Treelo, are the Java babies looking to be re-homed, ;)
Just bought a nice piece of bog wood and looking to get some to attach.
PM'd you to.
Cheers
