My friend is giving me a couple of java ferns with about 6 leaves each.
But i got no substrate nor CO2 in my 10gal.

Would they still do okay?
( i don't expect some crazy growth. As long as they dont turn brown and die off)

Java Fern is one of those plants that will is 'Har to Kill' It will grow in almost any conditions.

The Riccia on the other hand will grower than I said as I didn't realise you didn't have CO2 (This will also mean it won't pearl)

Why not DIY yourself a CO2 bottle up and then buy a diffusor of some sort like the Nano ones from Aquatic Magic (They are about $10)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nano-Co2-diffuser-Sm...1QQcmdZViewItem

My DIY bottle (I also have 2 Nutrafins) is just the following:

1 x 2 Ltr Coke Bottle
1 x CO2 hose straight connector Join (1 pack of various hose connectors = $2 from your local DIY shop or LFS)
Silicone Sealant

Put 1 hole in the centre of the coke bottle lid with a bradawl (or sharp spike) making sure the hole is smaller than the hose connector)
Widen the hole both sides with a philips screwdriver
Push the hose connector into the hole (This needs to be tight)
Seal bothe sides with silicon sealant (Aquarium type)
Leave 48 hours to cure properly
Attach Co2 or airline tubing (CO2 tubing is much better as it lets less escape and is approx $3 on ebay)
Attach to the diffusor in the tank

Mix for the bottle:
11 desertspoons sugar
1 teaspoon bread yeast.
Fill bottle with warm water to ½cm above where the bottle starts to curve towards the lid
Screw the cap on tight
Wait 2-3 hours for it to start working

There is also a recipe on the diffosor link above if you want to use a bigger bottle

Viola CO2

Change mix once a week in your lights out period

They been pearling ever since 2hours i put them in the tank.

so many bubbles. kinda look nasty.
So i usually take a stick and swirl around.

Plants normally seem to pearl when introduced to a new tank.

still pearling...
hm..

by the way. riccia is hard with algae eaters.
They keep on sucking on the rock making some of the riccia to seperate and float on surface.
Its so anooying.I feel like grabbing them and ducktaping their mouths. :)

I also learned why people say to make the net as tight as possible. Mine was pretty loose, and when i put it in the tank,
boom! A puff of green riccia.

Yeah mine is tight but I dont have trouble with the algae eaters!!!

4 pitbull plecs and 4 mollies always picking at it. 100s of MTS always going through the net and eating anything that gets caught in it.

Haven't seen the shrimp for days so can't comment on them

Riccia do not need CO2 for pearling / bubbles.

As long as riccia can photosynthesis and most important is:

Yr tank must reach 8.5 Mg/L of dissolved oxygen.

If yr tank less then 8.5, how much CO2 u gave , the riccia won't show bubbles.

how to get more oxygen:

1) higher flowrate
2) air pump ( not recommend , it gave oxygen but not define dissolved oxygen)

Doesn't sun have an impact on pearling? I recall this one case where dude had a bunch of plants in an outdoor pond and they were pearling a lot.
