I purchased a whole bunch of java fern today, quite large, approx 6-7 inches tall.
It looks really nice, except some of the leaves have brown holes in them.

What is it missing? Nutrients that is?

I get leaves that do the same thing, but the good news is that these brown hole-filled leaves tend to later producs little plantlets. I would leave them alone, your plant is probably just fine. They do grow slowly and take time to look good.

edit: Some liquid fertilizer wouldn't hurt though.

heya griz. thanks for the response.

"Some liquid fertilizer wouldn't hurt though."

I dose my main tanks with the following:

KN03
K2S04
seachem comp
seachem iron
seachem calcium, magnesium
seachem excel (non co2 tanks)
seachem trace
All planted tanks have 75-100% laterite substrate.
Root tabs are used on most root feeders.
Peat moss utilized as filter media, and in the substrate (in nylon bags under the substrate)
Recently I started to boil my own peat too make my own black water additive as well, thanks to the idea I got from here. :D
No P04 due to the high phosphorus PPm in my tap water.

The rest I use florapride and/or plantgro and Ferreal + Spureal (think thats how its spelled)

Ferts isnt a problem. :D
I wasnt sure if they were developing the brown spots natrually due to old age and reproduction, or if it was a possible nutrient from above they were lacking due to poor management at the LFS.
I read several articles online that said the older leaves will die off like that when the "baby" ferns are almost ready to drop of the mother leaf.
Hopefully thats all it is and I didnt buy a bunk bunch of ferns. :/

**Edit**

But that still leaves me with the question:
Is there a paticular nutrient that these ferns maybe needing?
I checked the leaves closer today and many of them that are browning do not have a baby on them, leading me to believe its a deficiency problem.
