ok until recently i have been keeping java ferns in the subsrate, on finding out this was wrong, i rubber-banded some leaves and plantlets on the driftwood, how long should i leave the bands on???

A good question! I've recently bought some and tied it to small rocks. Is it reasonable to think it might take hold on them at some point?

Depends on your lighting. Usually a few weeks.

The more light, the faster the growth.
