I was under the impression java fern leaves grew from the rhizome at the bottom of the plant. I’ve had new leaves growing from there.

However I noticed roots half way up the stems of some of my leaves…I just left it and ignored it thinking some root had come loose and just got stuck there….however upon closer inspection I have baby leaves growing on them. Not just one….I have loads of leaves with baby java ferns growing on them….is this normal? Is it java fern? I pulled a few off last week to investigate closer and there are more growing on the leaves now!

I have java fern in both tropical and cold water tanks and it is doing the same in both!

It sounds like its just a runner. Where new plants grow from. ie the main plant is the mother plant, then you have the stem coming from it and that is where the daughter plants grow from. They should start developing their root systems soon.

Yeah, just pluck 'em off and attach them to something. I pulled 5 off mine a few weeks ago.
