i've had a java fern in my 125litre tank since setting up my tank about 3 months ago and recently its started sprouting like crazy! so much so that it looks really unattractive. There are brown roots all over the place and smaller leaves coming out of the older ones. Is there anything i can do to keep this under control without having to prune weekly?

tank is very low tech. pretty standard lighting (no more than 10hrs a day), no ferts used, no co2 system. why am i having so much unwanted success with this one plant?

thanks in advance

I have to prune my tank weekly and I also have a low-light tank, albeit I add some CO2 and have decent substrate down, along with adding liquid plant fertiliser.

The nature of having live plants is that they will need regular attention, though some grow slower than others, and it seems you've picked a plant that really likes your tank :)

yep the java fern is just enjoying its self, just pull the new plantlkets off the leaves and you should be finew

Why can't I have this problem :( I need more to fill out my tanks.

But yeah, it's just the planted doing well.

If I remember correctly George used to pull off old/ugly leaves off his Java fern weekly. And you can greatly see that that Java fern was ace :good:

Wow, so lucky of u... I have just got my own first java fern recently, for about 1 to 2 weeks, they start sprouting a lot too. But I am enjoying that... From this thread, I learnt that java fern will have new plantlet come out from the leaf. Somthing interesting, will check my java fern's leaf tonight... :)
