Once I set up my 20 gal. I'd love to plant it. I know there will not be very much light in the tank so some low light plants are ness. I'm not sure what's going in the tank yet but assume no leaf nippers :). I've fallen in love with the java ferns and the java moss. I have some appealing driftwood (in the process of being treated) and I know the combination fern/moss/driftwood will look great. Would this setup be boring? *eek!* Any other suggestions for a beginning green thumb?

java ferns are easy enough to keep and with lots of wood and plants attached to it i feel that it would make a great show tank, epes if you had boseman rainbows ( i think they called). I have loads of java fern and it seems to produce baby plants in my co2 tanks, got loads now. java moss unforunatly never had much luck with lack one. I am sure someone on the forum could help ya out with that one thou. take care and have fun!

I have some higher light tanks and some lower light tanks. The moss seems to like to the lower light best. I do not use CO2 injection, so no info there. You might also try some Cryptocoryne wendtii. These do well in lower light tanks, they grow slowly however.

If you have a 20 with an all glass top, you can use a double light strip, or two light strips. This will allow you to have more variety of plants. I this a 20 high or a 20 long?

I ordered some Java Fern by mail and it came with no instructions for planting. From what I have read I think that I am not supposed to plant it in substrate but tie it to a rock or driftwood? Right now I have each plant tied to a small lava rock. Is this acceptable? :/

Yep! You can tie them to rocks or wood with fishing line or, as I prefer, attach them with an elastic. In short order, they'll be attached on their own and you can remove the elastic or fishing line or w.h.y.
