Has anyone ever owned a JAPANESE FIGHTING FISH, my friend saw one at my

lfs and wanted to buy me it as a gift, I said no thanks, as I know nothing about

them. Except the are beautiful fish with gorgeous colouring.

Anyone know anything about them??

um, do you possibly mean a siamese fighting fish, better known as a betta? check out the betta section of the forum..........

Never heard of a japanese fighting fish, you might wanna google it. If you do mean SIAMESE fighting fish then go for it, they are very hardy and one of the most adaptable tropical fish out there.

Oh I'm sorry were you offended by my remark? All I meant was bettas are a good choice for a beginner as they are quite hardy. :p No harm meant. Of course they deserve to be treated just as well as any other fish.

bkk_group, you wanna handle this one?  :)
nah, not gonna go there :p
I don't get it. Some kinda inside joke? Or is japanese fighter another name for siamese fighter?
Any small fish in an LFS termed as a 'fighting fish' is pretty much automatically a Siamese Fighting Fish. But the long-finned bettas make terrible arena fighters.

ok ok, i didn't really think i'd have to explain that there is no such thing as a "japanese" or even "chinese" fighting fish but i suppose missinformation abounds out there, no doubt perpetrated by missguided, uninformed LFS employees and owners. if you do not know their proper names ie. betta (or if you are thai: plakat), it is acceptable to call them "siamese" fighting fish, or even more correctly "thai" fighting fish (seeing as siam is now called thailand). thailand gets the credit, because the fish was first developed into a fighter there, over 700 years ago. that, and the fish is not native to either japan or china proper. ;)
