I've aquired a 4ft clearseal tank from a very kind person at my local freecycle. The problem is it looks as if it's had a knock along the bottom of the tank (well, looks more like it's been dragged). Would any of you use it, or is it a lost cause. If it needs repairing what could i repair it with, would sealant do.

All along the bottom there are loads of chips in it, then at one of the corner, a piece of the glass is missing, you can feel the glass from the front panel that sits on the botto. I've enclosed some pics below. The tank is laying on it's side so i could take some pics.

hello mate

how goes it? the barbs are doing well

anyway, yeh that tank still has life in it, i've repaired / reinforced a lot worse with Silicone

I always do it "messy" as its more important it holds water than looks good (in my opinion) i put silicone on the inside and outside just to be sure and wait 48-72hrs to be sure before i test it with water

Always leave the tank full up for 24 hrs to double check

Good to hear they are doing well. I saw your pics of the tank the other day, they looked good, was gonna post, but was in a hurry.

So, the tank still has life in it, nice!!! Whats the best silicone to use, can i get some from say B & Q!! (The mess bit's not important as i can just have the chipped corner facing the wall).

Cheers, i'll have a look tomorrow, got a couple of shops near me, i'm impatient to get this started, can't wait for the postman to deliver lol!!

one thing to bare in mind when putting silicone on the tank, when i said "messy" you still want the tank to basically sit even on a surface, once i put so much silicone on the bottom edge one half of the tank was higher than the other half which isnt good.

I generally smooth the silicone over, so the silicone even covers parts of the tank underneath that are absolutely fine, hard to explain, it just means the silicone is spread more evenly and so the bottom of tank is still flat, deffo use polystyrene sheets, you can put as much silicone as you like on the inside in the corner, peeps might say no point, but i liek to make sure there's extra silicone both sides to make sure, last thing you wanna do, is repair it, wait 48-72hrs, fill it up and you got the tiniest of leaks coz you were stingy on the silicone,

if that happens you got to make sure tank is completely dry (or area being repaired) add more, then wait 48-72 hrs again!!!

Cheers mate. Now i've got to think what i want in it (if it repairs well).

Maybe a species tank of some sort. Hmm, i'll have to do some research. Maybe even an oddballs tank. Oh, decisions, decisions.
