well i saw some canned crab meat at a supermarket and me being, well, me i was thinking about my BBG's. I picked up the can of the crab meat and checked the ingredients label, it said "white crab meat" and the front of the can said "all natural". SO i bought it and tried it for my BBG's. I washed it under water real well and broke it up into tiny pieces, put it into the filter output and the BBG's went crazy! ive never seen them take to a new food so well. They were actually nipping at each other to get to the little pieces floating around. The figure 8's picked up the pieces that hit the sand and they seemed to like them quite well too. Not as crazy about it as the BBG's but still liked it alot. I know i should have asked before feeding it but i was too tempted. Is it bad for the fish?

If it were in oil or brine (or mayo!) or contained other ingredients it may have been a bad idea, but if it truly is nothing but crab meat then there's no reason that you shouldn't feed the little fellas with it.
As it's for human consumption you didn't really need to wash it either!

Happy spoilt gobies!

Can you feed this to green spotted puffers? Wonder if mine would like that, not sure, maybe I will try it, if I can find canned natural kind.

Whenever I used canned crab meat I always dip that piece of paper it comes wrapped in into the aquarium. Most fish do like crab meat, but I've noticed they get bored of it after a while. Not sure why. Possibly different brands of crab meat taste better?

Bags of frozen shrimp are a standard food for my fish. You can get them very cheaply in Asian supermarkets, especially. My bumblebee gobies enjoy small pieces of prawn, as do my glassfish and, bizarrely enough, my hatchetfish. It's quite funny to watch hatchetfish swimming about with bits of prawn hanging out of their mouths while being pursued by the ever-hungry halfbeaks.

Cheers,

Neale

PS. The quick rule of thumb for feeding fish is anything "cold blooded" is worth trying, but avoid "warm blooded" meat at all costs, i.e., birds and mammals. The fats and oils in warm blooded animals congeal inside cold blooded fish, clotting their veins and arteries. This is obviously as bad for them as it is for us. Cold blooded things, like crustaceans, insects, and molluscs, are always worth a try. Pretty much anything from the seafood counter is fair game (except whale meat!).

I think I'm going to give it a try too. My F8s would not eat thawed shrimps, scallops, or squids.

My GSP eats unshelled shrimp but today put one in and she hasn't touched it yet. I always take out uneaten shrimp the next morning, incase she decides to eat some after I put off her light at night. Will have to go find some other seafood for her, she might be getting bored with the shrimp and it wouldn't hurt to see what else she will eat. She will only eat bloodworms and no other frozen daphnia or anything like that. She will eat small snails I get from my community tank, which is good because they need that to keep their teeth from growing.

I recently added a mussel to my tank with BBG's, DP's and plec in, and bizarrely the only fish to try and consume it were the BBG's. Regardless that the mussels was at least twice their size, they would swim to it (often sitting on it) take a bit off it, and then swim at full pelt in the opposite direction, in an attempt to tear it. I planned only to leave it in the tank for ten minutes, but I removed it, tore some tiny pieces for the BBG's, and dropped it in for them. They ate it.

i've found the same with mussels as Fella - my figure 8's love them, and its only about 99p for enough to last a month or two! i usually freeze them when i buy them, and when feeding break them up in the water as they thaw - the BBG's go mad for the smaller bits

I guess different F8s have different preference. I tried "Marine Predator Packs" which are mostly chopped mussels. My F8s spit it out right after they tried. My F8s are weird :shifty:
