i have ran out of room and need to spare a tank for other fish, so i am putting the Melachromis Maingano & cobalt blue cichlids together, i know the mainganos are more agressive but but they crossbreed? becuase i dont want them to...?

Both species are different enough that cross-breeding shouldn't be a problem. However, it is always possible when mixing speices.

Oh, and fyi, melanochromis maingano has had a name change to melanochromis cyaneorhabdos.

If you run out of room, buy another tank. sheesh I don't know :)

In my experience maingano are more peaceful than cobalt zebras. It also depends on if the fish are similar sized and whose tank they are going into. If you put them all into a new tank at the same time, there should be less issues. If you put the zebras into the maingano's tank (or vice versa) then there could be rumbles.

Lots of cichlids will cross breed but if they have compatible partners of their own kind, they will be less likely to hybridise.

thanks for the advise, also i have a problem about getting more tanks as i live at my mums and dads and i have 16 tanks here already and they dont want me to run anymore power:(

Ha, I'm 24 and have my own place. My mother still got super angry at the idea of me buying another tank.

I'm 25, have a husband, 3 kids, a dog, a cat, a 125 gallon cichlid tank, working on setting up a 120 gallon saltwater setup (after christmas), a 30 gallon saltwater shortly, a 75 gallon cichlid tank to move the 125 gallon fish into....oh yea and our very own house :p

Think I beat ya for things going on...except for the 16 tanks. I'd bet my kids and housework make up for the time it takes to manage them :)
