I am so tempted to try it and see how it works. I think I just might try it once I find that old filter and tell you all how it works. My friend dad used it and he got nitrate right away instead of ammonia or nitrite  I don't know whether to trust that but I'll try this stuff and keep you all informed. ;)

i wouldn't count on it...

these bacteria are often dead bacteria. SO many people use it, like the Hagen Cycle product, didn't do a thing for me in my tank.

Your best bet is to use mature filter media or cycle your tank to start your bacteria colony in the filter.

Since I have Aquaclear HOB filters, I just keep extra "bio bags" in my AC 300s.
The biobag is basically some ceramic pebble looking things in a net upon which bacteria very easily grow. I may be getting another tank soon (see "I think she's caving in") and if I do, all I'll have to do is put those extra bags in the new filter and I have a bacteria colony already. The bio bags only cost about 4 - 5 dollars and I know they work.

If you don't already have a tank running that is cycled, ask a friend if you could put one or two of these in their tank. It would work the same as gravel in a stocking.

Also, I am sure that other brands of filter (e.g. Penguin or Emperor) have similar inserts where you can seed a new tank.
