I was at the LPS the other day and came across a pretty blue male Delta...the poor thing was in sad shape...a lot of tail was suffering from probably fin rot and he was lookin a tad underweight. He also didn't seem to be swimming good (but that's a no brainer 'cause of the shape of his tail!), and well, he looked like he could have been on the verge of death. I was soo very tempted to buy him! But I just can't afford another filtered tank right now! I could put Cowboy in a large glass vase, and put this guy in the 3-gallon until he got well...if he got well...but I'd hate to kick Cowboy out of his home too...what should I do? I know ya'll prefer Bettas in anything over 2.5 gallons, but sheesh, anything is better than being in a small store container!

A LPS of mine keeps some Bettas in the ####tiest housings. That store was horrible... I saw like 3-4 dead fishes, lots of fin rots, some of the water was so cloudy I couldnt even see the poor fish. Plus I saw a Betta in a housing that's only about 5 times its size.

If you see a Betta you wanna "help", then pick it up. You don't NEED a filter/heater/5gal+ tank, just give them enough living space and maintain it regularly and they'll be fine. Like you said, anything is better than those store containers. Go save some Bettas, but don't buy so much and end up with 12 like me lol.

Thats very sad and lots of us rescue bettas but others feel if we buy them we're encouraging the store to keep housing them in cups. I i.e. you buy him the store thinks bettas are popular and buy more to replace him, putting them in plastic cups also. My LPS has a few bettas in tanks with a ridiculously high water flow and they are worn out and ill its sad but I suck it up and leave them there because I dont want the store to buy more of the poor little chaps. Maybe try and have a word with a shop assistant they might shoot you down of course, but you can always have a go!

I have two local stores. 1 called pets at home - I bought alot of fish from there however I would get them home and they woul die within the week. The bettas from there you have no chance of saving. I decided to go to the other store. - Marine Aquatic and low and behold this place took care of all the fish very well. Its amazing in the difference. All the bettas were full of life. However one betta had jumped into the tank next to it where another betta was held...but they wern't fighting? I found that abit odd but oh well!

I went to go shop around pets at home for some ornaments and I saw a woman refuse to sell a Betta to some customer because, at 4 weeks + and a cycled tank, they said the tank wasn't mature for one.

im still in shock they actually didnt try and flog everything off as quick as possible

Yeah I know what ya'll are saying...I don't want to contribute to the factor...but this Betta looked like he could/would have been beautiful if he wasn't in such a sorry shape. UGH I keep thinking about him so maybe I should go get him...
