I went into a Pets At Home for the first time :hyper: All the tanks looked quiet clean, with no dead fish and no cheap looking gravel. I was browsing and came across 2 females-one ordinary oen that you see evryday at every LFS and oen lovely red veiltail one! SHe was a beauty! SO i looked for the price tag for females and they are 7 quid each! 7 quid for a veiltail female betta! I asked to double check andf they said yep theyre 7 pound as breeders dont like to sell them as they need the females...(right i say to my self) Females are quiet hard to come by so thats why there so dear... :)rolleyes to my self)
I was tempted to buy it but she looked really agressive as she was beating up the other one...i dont think shed have got on with mine.
So am i being a bt dramatic or arent i...7 quid for a LFS betta....more like 2.50!!!!!

I noticed the last batch of bettas round near me were pricey. At my lps they were £6 and they had sold out. Down at the aquatic centre they were £6.99. Dunno whether they are all on the same band wagon. :good:

£7 is a bit much for a female VT in a shop my male VTs were £4.99 from a shop, my others from private breeders were more

I think that's a bit excessive...I pay £2.50, or 2 for a fiver at my local Peter Barretts garden centre-and they are always really nice fish.
I think my local one gets theirs from someone in staffordshire-all Uk bred!
They also can try to order you fish in if you're after something particuarly special. I've never tried though.
Cambodians, and veiltails seem to be what they mostly get in-though on occasion there is a double tail.

My other LFS sells VeilXPlakat females for £1.75! Absolute bargain they are, if you want a more "natural" tank, as they aren't very brightly coloured at all.

I tend to find that the females are cheaper than the males, though harder to get hold of.
But perhaps in a way, this is a very good thing?
The Peter Barretts is always crowded on a Sunday, and they sell stacks of fighters-mostly as a alternative first to goldfish...not that I'm saying it isn't a good thing, just that I've had to talk to a guy wanting to put three males in a small tank...

I honestly don't rate my Pets at Home as a very good place for fish at all.
Don't get me wrong, if you have a fluffy pet, they are a wonderful store-I get all my cat stuff from there.
The aquatics department stinks of ripoff to me, they charge the earth for bread and butter fish!

If you were prepared to pay £7, why not order one from one of the breeders online? That way you could have something extremely special!
If you have one nearby, go to a Peter Barretts! I don't know if it applies to all of them, but my local is absolutely marvelous for fish! They get loads of exotics in, not just your everyday fish, and the majority of the staff are nothing but help.

Does that help?

they're $4 for Veil tails and like $7 for twin tails/ CTs then $14.99 for "wild" bettas at my LFS

You say it was aggressive.... could it have been a plakat? Did it have an ovipositor? And also, I live in Canada so I have no Idea how much money that is.

No idea with money conversions, lol, but around here the most expensive I've ever seen a females was $2.50 USD
