Hi i bought some wood and its been soaking for a week so far and just doesn't look like its going to sink. Does this look like proper bogwood to you? How long does it usually take for it to sink?
Well it looks like bogwood to me, it usually sinks straight away as its quite heavy, any pieces i have sank ok, the only thing i can suggest is to put it in a bucket and weigh it down with a rock or something to keep it submerged, and leave it there until it has soaked up a sufficient amount of water to make it sink
the grain of wood is too dense to be bogwood, it looks more like mopani to me, but mopani is a very dense wood and don't float even when freshly cut from a tree.
whatever it is, as suggested, soak it in abucket untill it is water logged.
It looks just like the mopani wood I have. Mine sank after a couple of days floating in the tank (there were no fish at that point). Mind you, sometimes it tries to float after a water change...
I don't think boiling it would make it sink any quicker than giving it a good soak in a bucket for a few days.
Definately boil it for a bit to get some of the tannins out (SOME).
I left mine outside for a few weeks (just because I'm lazy and didn't get around to putting it in) but it shouldn't take more than a day or two if you've weighed it down in the bucket.
boiling it will force the air to expand and will them bubble out of the wood - as the wood cools it the sucks water back in to replace the air - it all helps
we normally get it into position and them fill a sandwich bag with gravel and use it to weigh it down - and just leave it. then after a few weeks gently lift the bag - if the wood moves - let the bag go and leave it
2) soaking in a bucket for a few days obviously won't work if soaking it in a big tub doesn't work (bucket is way too small). and i DON'T wanna remove the tannins, i want the tannins in my tank.
