Hi,
just noticed this morning that one of platties has a whitespot on the back fin. Iv'e searched google images and it does not look like Ich, As there is only one white mark. Fish seems happy, not showing any other symptons. Any advice please?
Sorry about the poor quality picture.

Water stats.

120L (1m)
Ammonia 0
NitrIte 0
PH 7.6
NitrAte 10

Thanks

I think you're right it doesn't look like whitespot.

It could be a cyst or some other form of parasite.

Has the situation changed at all? Do the other fish have this? any rubbing or scratching by the afflicted fish?

Hi Sofia.
Thanks for your reply.
Affected platty seems to Ok, acting normally. If anything the spot is getting a bit bigger. Looks too big to be ICH and it is just the one spot. Another platty now look like it has the same spot, same place, alot paler in colour though. Been watching tank for an hour now and can see no rubbing or gasping or anything else untoward.
I did spot a copuple of Platty fry hiding though!!! (Not from affected platty(s).)

All other fish (Albino & 3 stripe Corys, Neons & Cardinals, & an Elephant fish) in this tank seem OK. I have another 60L tank with 4 male Guppys in, Do you think I should move the Elephant fish in preperation for some meds? Or will that stress him too much. Maybe I should move the Platties in the smaller tank?

Thanks again

If you think they may require Meds then i would definitely move the elephant fish. I'm sure it will stress him, but as you dont know whats wrong with the others yet it may be a good precaution to take.

It does not look like ich, but you never know, hopefully someone like Wilder can help.

hi as said it doesnt look like whitespot,it looks a little big. in my experience whitespot is more like grains of salt sprinkled over the fish, sometimes you see a lot on a fish, sometimes only one or two speckles. it could be a cyst or a patch of fungus, you could try some melafix - ive had quite good success with the stuff using it for fungus & finrot even though some people find it useless.
i know elephant (nose) fish have a few problems with quite a few different meds but im not sure about melafix.
good luck

Because you have a Mormyrid I would wait until you figure out what this is before you treat the tank. If you have a spare tank to put the elephant fish in then you could move him, but I don't know how sensitive these fish are to being moved around so you should use your own judgment in this case.

If another fish has it then it most probably is bacterial but I find it odd that it's in exactly the same place as the other fish!!! Can you describe the spot anymore? does it look solid? fluffy? is it filled with liquid?

Do you have any myxazin by waterlife it's a very good bacterial med but you can't use it with Mormyrids in the tank I believe.

It looks like a Zit!!! Whitehead spot that you just wanna squeze!!! (OMG That sounds SO awful!) Very white in colour raised from the body and it seems slighty bigger on one side than the other? So, Seems to go all the way through tail fin. At the base. Im going to try and get some better pictures with my rubbish camera!!
Im going to leave it all at the moment just keep a close eye. If the other fishes spot has got bigger I will move the EN to smaller tank., and start meds..Only meds I have are melafix. EN is not that shy had him 2 months now and he eats from my hand.

Wait till Wilder comes on, she usually pops on in the evening. She has all the information she needs now to make a definate diagnosis.

She'll know what it is :)

Sorry I couldn't be anymore help

Sofia, you have been a help. thank you.
Calling Wilder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any redness to the spot on the outside or centre.
Does the spot resemble a cauliflower.

Hi Sofia, Hi Wilder

All fish seem OK, Water Stats the same as yesterday. No change in either of the spots.

No redness anywhere on fish and spot is pure bright white, Texture wise it is raised but smooth, not like cauliflower at all.
Typical fish is being shy so cant get any more pics at the mo

Thanks

Can you issolate the fish as I would try a bacterial med.

I have two tanks running, platty is in the 120L ,I have also a 60L which at the mo has 4 male guppies and BN. I can have a swop round! So the platty is on his own in the 60L.
What meds would you reccommend?

Anti internal bacteria med by interpet.
Make sure it dosn't start to resemble a caulifower or grow more spots like a cluster of berries as then its viral lymthocsystis.
