ok well i bought 2 male guppies and a sword tail. they looked awsome so i thought id give it a go at the breeding. while i was waitin for the females, one of the guppies died.
while adding the females, i went and bought another male from my lfs. this one was blue and purple while the other male is red. i got home, put the females in and waited for the new male to climatise. he died within 2 days.
one of the females had fry the next day. i caught them, put them in a bag and climatised them in a "fry tank" ive called it. they all disappeared.
now, my swordtail looks as tho its gonna burst.

these pics arent too good but i was wondering if anyone could tell me if my swordtail is pregnant.
it is prossible for a guppy to pregnate a swordtail.
the guppy looks as the he has been (the only way to put it) trying with the swordtail.
if the swordtail isnt pregnant, why is it so fat?

thanks x

Well, I couldn't find the other post so I'll respond in this one. Your swordtail could be pregnant, but that doesn't mean that the guppy is the father. Swordtail and guppy can't breed (that's what I've heard) but swordtails (like platty, molly, and guppy) can store sperm for up to 7 months. So your swordtail was obviously housed with a male swordtail at some point and this one mating will allow her to continue to drop fry for the next several months. :D

hi,
your pic of a swordtail looks male to me, females dont have the sword part to their tail.
guppys dont breed with swords either. platys can. as with all livebearers 2-3 females per male is the best situation to stop any stress on the females. im not sure why hes so big, how often are they fed?,
is the fry tank filtered? is it possable they are being sucked in to it?

Yeah, after looking at that picture again, it does seem that there is a sword. While it is true that only the males have the swords, I have some female lyretails that have elongated fins, but they are elongated on the top as well as the bottom.

So unless the top part of her tail fin is missing, I'd say donna is correct in saying that your picture is of a male. Could you get a better picture of her/him with all her/his fins up instead of held close to the body? That way we'll be able to tell for sure. :D

By the way, here's a picture of one of my lyretail sword females. When I first got her, her fins were damaged and she could have been mistaken for a male.

Her tail is completely healed now and she is doing fantastic! :D
