OMG. My pretty lemon yellow female in my signature has something very bad happening. I just saw it this morning. Her entire "face" is swollen on one side-- scales sticking out only near the eye and head, and a bubble is surrounding the eye. What is this and how should I treat it?!! I tried to get some pictures, but they're not the best. Please help!! I've moved her to her own container. None of the other fish in the tank show any of the same symptoms. I've treated the water with nitrofurazone in the main tank and in the container she's been moved to, and gave her a few medicated pellets...but she didn't eat them.

She's tattered from a recent spawning attempt, but she wouldn't have anything to do with the male (3rd attempt...she's just not a breeder. :(), and she did have a bit of redness in the area where I believe he nipped her.

Or bless.
Popeye and dropsy are closely related due to the build up of fluids.
Once scales stick out organ failure last stage of dropsy, fish never seem to make it once scales stick out.
If you want to try and save the fish epson salts baths and anti internal bacteria med by interpet..
I would issolate the fish if its not on its own as if the fish dies in the tank, other fish in the tank peck at the dead body it can pass on this way.

You think it's dropsy? The scales are only sticking out on the head near the eye...not the stomach at all...

k.
I would add some marcyn to the tank then.

You could use maracyn one and two to cover all bases, or just maracyn plus.

Maracyn
Manufacturer: Mardel
A broad-spectrum antibiotic for gram-positive bacterial infections. For infections of columnaris (body fungus), fin and tail rot, popeye, gill disease, and secondary infections.

Maracyn Plus Biospheres Antibacteria 8oz
