Hey guys, sorry if it seems like im spamming the forums atm with new topics but i was going to post this question in my one from yesterday but i was hoping for a quick answer because its sorta urgent.

I originally spoke of my beta spending alot of time near the surface, however today its sorta the complete opposite, hes often physically laying on the base of the aquarium for a couple minutes then he swims off. Is this normal behavior? I checked the tank temp and its 23c encase it was too cold and thought this may cause him to do such actions.

Also i was told by 2 lps staff to only feed my beta every couple days to start with, is this true? Because I dont want to not feed him if day to day feeding will help him settle quicker. I apologise if all these things are common and im making posts about nothing but i just want to make sure as this is my first beta :(

Iv also read on these forums that keeping tropical fish is all about learning from mistakes and "trial and error" and where as i understand this mindset, id rather not risk the health of my fish and im sure you will all agree with me on that.

In my experience, it's not unusual for a betta to "rest" on the bottom of the tank. I've caught my boy Luck doing it, so unless he's exhibiting other bizarre behaviour, I would tend to think it's okay. And as for feeding...well, they don't NEED to be fed every day, but I'm pretty sure most of the forum members--myself included--feed their bettas at least once a day. Good for you for not accepting the "trial and error" thing as the gospel truth :good:

I feed all my boys and girls twice a day with my hand in the tank so yeah lol I can no longer put my hands in the tank with out fish nipping at my fingers.

And most of my boys and girls rest either on the ground, in the plants, in the decorations, on the decorations, or just about anywhere they can get to

If he isn't suffering from fin rotting than you shouldn't have to worry about it much. Often times my betta does that as well and I've had him for awhile now. Although if you are worried you can always by a bottle of health regen just incase.

To build on this question, my betta does the same thing (resting on the bottom) but he also has dug under one of my rocks and hides under it. He even wedged himself between two rocks and needed rescuing. I've since changed the formation so he can't do this, but he always manages to dig a hole... Is this normal?

He is probably trying to make another hiding place so kind of but kind of not then again both of my giant bettas dig so yeah... my smaller ones don't...

Hi there.....ask as many questions as you like thats what we are here for. I've put in more than my quota over the weeks and everyone on this forum are great! when it comes to any concerns about your fish. Did you prime your tank before you introduced your fish? It may pay you to get an ammonia test kit to make sure you don't have ammonia. When anything rots in your tank ammonia will build up and thats what will kill your fish. I feed my fish 2 times a day even if they are new but only feed them what they can eat as the rest will fall to the bottom and rot hence the ammonia. I change the water every week about 25% do it gradual not sudden as this stresses them out. Having a cifelling hose is good so you can suck up the yucky matter on the bottom. The temperature in my tanks are around 26-28c. If your fish is a bit under the weather sometimes a little bit of salt can perk him up 1 teasp to 2.5 gallons of water (aquarium salt not table salt). I'm sure you will get more input from others soon to give you extra advice. Good luck :good:
