Im new to keeping fish and dont know alot.  Im a bad parent and dont have any tests other than an ammonia test.

200l tank
test shows no ammonia
tank holds 6 mollies and 2 congo tetras

noticed about a week ago my black molly began to turn white. he has been lethargic and hiding near the filter.

Normally change out about 30-45l a week but have been doing it twice a week since i noticed the colour change.

many thanks

It doesn't look like whitespot, although it is difficult to say from the photo.

How old is the tank?

I'd also be very interested to know nitrite and nitrate readings as well, these are essential test kits, also the pH of the water would be good to know.

I need to get off my butt and buy a kit.  No where locally sells them.  Where is the best place to buy online?

The tank would be 6 months old now.

eBay usually has these test kits available to buy.

Although you are Aus, sometimes can be difficult to purchase certain things for the fish keeping hobby, i think these test kits are ok to get.

A  brand that is popular amongst members of this forum tends to be API FW Master Test kit, these usually have pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate tests with instructions and 4 glass vials/test tubes.

One other thing, you make no mention if you have cycled this tank.

If you're unsure what I mean by cycling, have a read of this.

Any signs of flicking and rubbing?
Darting around the tank?
Excess slime on gills, body, fins.
Does it look like the fish has been dusted in talc?

If not signs of parasites it looks like columnaris.

Yes Tank was cycled.  Had a good study of the fish yesterday.  He seems reasonably healthy apart from the change in colour.  He isnt his normal self but his fins arent clamped, he isnt having any real troubles, he isnt covered in slime or anything.

Have ordered a test kit now so will be able to check everything by wednesday i hope.

I would treat for columnaris if the fish is not showing signs of parasites.
