USA,
i was going 2 buy a cat fish today to go w/my other 1, well the little rat guy said not unless your 18, i said i am, but didnt have anything 2 show him, so i couldnt get 1, isnt that stupid? or do yall think not

i know! and they have some really bad tanks, theyre lucky some1 wanted 2 get the fish, the catfish are the only ones they take care of.

I can understand where they are coming from though maybe set the age at 14 or so. You don't want a kid coming in, buying a fish only for it to die because of their own inexperience and the parents come in, demanding a refund and all that mess.

i know, he said i dont look 18, so he didnt belive me, rrrrr. i drive for goodness sakes, he could ahve let me bought it. but they lost a customer, so HA!

I don't see the benefits of having such a policy, but why don't you ask the lfs? Maybe they don't think kids are responsible enough... :dunno:

Well, the lps I worked at didn't allow any rodents or reptiles or birds bought without parent permission. But there wasn't a rule on fish. I wanted to get a hamster and I couldn't and I worked there!

I think it's an ok rule. But if your with your parents they should let you get a fish. Although in my case if my mom was with me when I bought fish I would have... lets see... oh ya, 0 fish.

I think it's better then the one petstore I went to where they were selling 9 year olds anole lizards with no place to put them. And big ol oscars and they didn't even have a tank

my mom was in there, she left though, but im not 5, i cant handle a little cat fish, i already had 2. one was eaten by a guppy, but i moved the other one. i just think its really stupid,

ok,
please don't beat me up for this....
i think its a great rule
there are too many people selling fish to anyone,
i'm not saying that adults can't be irrisponsible
lord knows they can be
but just think,
with a little organization
they could have a really good system going
most stores have customers entered into their computers right?
well then they can; at the parents request; give the options of either entering the childs name as "allowed" to purchase livestock (simular to parental consent at the video rental stores for a child to rent rated R movies) or have the child not entered and only allowed to purchase in the presence of the legal gardian or adult
i think it could be very helpful
if your parents don't allow you to own something
then chances are you are hiding it
now can you honestly tell me that you are capable of taking full care of a tank if it is in your closet?
is that possible?
won't someone hear it? or do you not provide filtration/ etc.
and won't your parents wonder where your allowance is going when you need meds, or a new heater, or anything else?

you shouldn't own something without parental consent IMO

EDIT: this post is not directed to wrs or anyone else, just using examples to state my opinion

It sounds like a stupid policy to me. Classic case of picking an arbitrary line and saying that people one side are responsible enough to have fish and people the other side aren't. I think a far better system would be to simply say "What other fish do you have?" "What size tank do you have?" "What are your water quality readings?". With those three simple questions you can very easily determine how responsible a person is, with respect to keeping fish alive.

I always cringe when I overhear conversations like this in an LFS:
Customer: I'd like one of these please [pointing at a betta, for example]
Assistant: OK. What other fish do you have in your tank at the moment?
Customer: Erm, I've got, erm, you know, a few normal fish, you know, erm... I think I've got a couple of, erm... those [pointing at some fish] and, erm, a little yellow one...
Assistant: OK sir, here's you fish, that'll be £x. Thanks for calling.

Dave

Hehe. my mom doesn't wonder where my money goes. she goes why don't you have any... oh... another betta...
Dammit Jennifer!!! You took over my entertainment center!!!!

Like the fish store owner says to my mom, "At least she's not spending her money on what you spent your money on when you were her age." Ahhh man. That guy is so full of wisdom. Of course he knows my mom from high school, or I doubt he would say that lol.

Oh, getting back to the subject, I think it's a great rule!!!!

I know most of you younger people think that this is being "racist" to younger kids. So an even better rule would be taking a test and getting a permit before owning fish or any other pet for that matter. But I doubt that will happen.

I'm sure the lfs questions adults as well to make sure they aren't stupid. Because even though they are 18+ doesn't mean they aren't retarded.

Oh, sorry, I guess I didn't make that obvious. I meant that the LFS should question EVERYONE, well, possibly except regular customers...

How about 'ageist'???

Dave

EDIT: What WAS your mother spending her money on when she was your age? If you don't know, I think you should make it your duty to find out!!!

mmmm i think its stupid to dont be allowed to have fishes unless you have 18.... i mean (no offense) i dont get the point in this country, they let you have a car at the age of 16 (wich you can kill YOUR OWN LIFE, and others) but dont let you have fishes unless parents permissions? that is difently RIDICULOUS.
i guess thats my point when it comes to "not allowed unless you are ....years old) i really dont get it.:/

Tell him that all that smoking you did stunted your growth.
